beware of global dimming.

I thought some folks would be interested in taking a look at this BBC documentary on global dimming. I found it very interesting.

Premier announces communications appointments

Edmonton... Two veteran journalists will join Premier Ed Stelmach's office in key communications roles. Premier Stelmach announced the appointment of Paul Stanway as Director of Communications and Tom Olsen as Director of Media Relations.

"I am very pleased to have both Paul and Tom as part of my new team," said Stelmach. "I have made it a priority to govern with integrity and transparency and Paul and Tom will play a key role in carrying out that goal and in ensuring a strategic, coordinated approach to communications from my office."

Stanway is an experienced Alberta journalist, editor and author. He has worked for The Winnipeg Free Press and The Toronto Sun, and was a member of the start-up team that launched The Edmonton Sun in 1978. Stanway served that newspaper in a number of senior editorial positions before being appointed Editor of The Calgary Sun in 1988. From 1989 to 1992 he was a foreign correspondent for the Sun newspaper group, based in London, England. He was appointed Editor in Chief of The Edmonton Sun in 1992, and held that position until 2001. Since that time he has worked as a freelance political columnist, and as an editorial consultant for a number of newspaper and magazine publishers.

Olsen has 20 years of experience as a journalist. He got his start doing an apprenticeship in Australia with John Fairfax and Sons Newspapers Ltd., where he trained at the Sydney Morning Herald. Olsen covered the Alberta Legislature for The Edmonton Sun in 1994 and was then appointed night city editor. He followed that with positions with CBC Radio as line-up editor and The Calgary Sun as city editor. He joined the Calgary Herald in 1998 and held the post of Alberta Legislature Bureau Chief for both the Herald and the Edmonton Journal from 2001-2003. Olsen most recently wrote a provincial affairs column for the Herald, and was also a frequent radio and television commentator on provincial affairs.

Marisa Etmanski will remain with the Premier's Communications Office for a few weeks while Stanway and Olsen transition into their new roles. "Marisa has been an incredible support to me and my office over the last couple of months and I want to thank her for her willingness to help with the transition," said Stelmach. "Marisa has been invaluable to me and certainly was to former Premier Ralph Klein. Her 14 years in this office are a testament to her loyalty, her skills, and the tremendous relationships she built with people both inside and outside the Government of Alberta."

Tom Olsen--not especially surprising. He always seemed like a de-fanged bizarro version of Graham Thomson to me.
