nomination updates and more...

Some nomination updates for your Wednesday afternoon reading pleasure...

Calgary-Egmont
- Disavowed Progressive Conservative candidate Craig Chandler is threatening to sue Ed Stelmach's PC party for:

the $127,000 he claims he spent on his campaign to secure the party's nomination in Calgary-Egmont.

And he may run for the seat in the next provincial election as either an independent or for a different party.
It looks like me like Craig Chandler is looking for is a political home to keep him warm and cozy for the holidays. Maybe these guys can help him out...

Calgary-Nose Hill - Len Borowski has been nominated to run for the Alberta Liberals against first-term incumbent Tory Neil Brown.

Edmonton-Strathcona - The PCs have nominated Hughena Gagne. I really don't know any more about Ms. Gagne than that she defeated Whyte Avenue pretty-boy Chad Blake (who demonstrated his impeccable grammar skills here). Gagne will take on already nominated ND Rachel Notley and Green Adrian Cole.

West Yellowhead - Alberta Liberal candidate Lisa Higgerty will take on PC candidate Robin Campbell. West Yellowhead has been known to hold a strong non-conservative base (see: Jasper vs. Banff). From 1989 to 1993 New Democrat Jerry Doyle held the seat. Doyle was defeated by Alberta Liberal Duco VanBinsbergen in 1993 and VanBinsbergen was defeated by Tory Ivan Strang in 1997.

Strang is not seeking re-election this time around. A local rumour has it that nominated Tory candidate Robin Campbell has a little too many NDP connections in his recent past than the local PC establishment can stomach, leaving many local Tories questioning whether they will have the time to give in the next campaign. The NDs have yet to nominate a candidate in West Yellowhead.

Concerning the Craig Chandler controversy, listen to Calgary Sun columnist Paul Jackson’s interview at www.cbc.ca/eyeopener

WOW...Paul Jackson's story is interesting (in a completely self-contradictory sort of way). Apparently he hates Chandler now.

What struck me was the implication that a columnist like Jackson writes what the government tells him to write. Free press, anyone?

I was slumming on the Project Alberta website (where they package all the right wing nuts in one wrapper) and even they don't want Chandler. This of course has set Chandler off since he's a regular poster there:

Craig Chandler - "the gift that keeps on giving"

Dave, are you sure Craig wouldn't be a better fit to this party?

(they have a billboard between Calgary and Strathmore)

Actually, Holly, the implication is that Jackson writes whatever he wants to, regardless of the evidence. Check the news on-line on the alleged "call from the Premier's office". There was no call from the Premier's Office, and Jackson admitted that (a) he had no idea who called, (b) he had no line to check that it was a government phone number, and (c) only because the unidentified person SAID they were from the Premier's office did he make that connection.

Jackson is no friend to Stelmach (see any one of his columns). If you have ever read any of his columns in the Calgary Sun that would become abundantly clear.

The only reason Jackson is disavowing the call now is because (a) the issue became public through Craig Chandler making it so, and (b) Jackson realizes he had no basis to make that accusation, and did no work whatsoever to check the source. Hardly something you would think a journalist who claims "43 years of experience" would do.

Here is an example:
"Holly, my name is Kevin Rudd, PM of Australia. I want you to vote Green in the next election." Now you can tell all your friends you got a personal message from the PM of Australia asking you to vote for the Green Party.

The only universal truth that comes out of this is that Jackson is incompetent, and Chandler is having a temper tantrum.

I think Kevin Taft and Craig Chandler make a good fit. Two big egos.

I seem to recall you once wrote that you saw Strathcona being a major battleground in the next campaign. Do you still see that as the case? Who are the Liberals running?

Rumours are just that. Personally knowing MR. Campbell,West Yellowheads PC candidate, for many years I would say that your information is far from being true. The most recent past, the early 90's etc. Mr. Campbell has been working very closely with the PC party. Just ask the incumbent!!
