don't sue me bro.

Good grief...

Web war between political parties

Two Liberal candidates, for the next provincial election, have had their domain names purchased by an apparent Tory supporter.

When you go to www.kenthehr.ca and www.cathiewilliams.ca users are redirected to the Conservative party website.

CTV News has learned that Andrea Kirby, for the
Kirby Financial Group, purchased the domain names. Kirby did not return CTV’s calls, or emails, asking about the purchase.

This latest development comes as the premier threatens to sue a former Liberal communications worker who purchased the domain name www.edstelmach.ca.

Kent Hehr says he will not be suing anyone over the matter. In fact, he says he appreciates the attention being drawn to his campaign.

It appears there is no longer a re-direct. Anyone try them before now?

According to the Edmonton Journal, she also bought the domain for daveberta.com

I tried yesterday morning and the Kent Hehr site re-directed to the PC Party page.

Nice trend you've started Dave. One more distraction within politics that will take away time and effort from producing or debating actual policy.

Your legacy is secure. At least you are amongst equals, being a Liberal and all.

Don't blame Dave. Isn't it a bit hypocritical for Ms. Kirby to purchase those domain names, after her party 's leader has threatened to sue someone for doing the same thing?

Of course we should blame Dave. What is about personal responsibility that bothers you Liberals so much? Who was the first one, in this chain of events, to go and register a domain name that he had no valid clame to? It was Daveberta.

Grow up. What Dave did was a cleve media stunt, through and through. It worked to once again embarass Ed Stelmach (not that Ed needed any outside help with that), but it did the same thing all political attacks do:

It lowered the bar.

It cheapened the process.

And it will probably result in fewer people feeling that voting has any validity whatsoever. As if we didn't have enough citizens turned off politics and democracy already.

Noooooo said...

It was funny when Dave did it, now the Tories are just being petty

It makes the conservatives look petty and small minded. At least it proves that they do not have an original bone in their body.

If Mr. Ed says it's "WRONG" and a "SUEABLE OFFENSE" why are his supporters turning about and doing it?

However, it sure is a complement to Kent and Cathy - it says that the conservatives are seeing them as a threat.

I don't think the Liberals have to campaign at all - the conservatives are doing all of the work for them.

Haha. That's a great line. Kent is going to be a great MLA for Calgary-Buffalo after the next election!

Too bad he's going to lose to Sean Chu and Craig Chandler will eventually be Premier after he wins the Wild Rose Alliance party leadership.

Questions:

a) Since when does personal responsibility entail taking the blame for the actions of others -- even those responding to you? Shouldn't personal responsibility mean that Andrea Kirby is responsible for her own actions?

b) What is the process by which one validates one's claim to a domain name? I don't seem to recall any such test when registering my own. Who bears the authority for validating these claims exactly, anyway?

Webnames issued on first-come, first-served basis

The Edmonton Journal

Re: "Stelmach threatens to sue blogger: Lawyers demand university student give up claim to edstelmach.ca," The Journal, Jan. 9.

I would like to clarify some points raised in this article regarding the registration of edstelmach.ca; specifically comments about Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) policy.

Dot-ca domains (webnames) are issued on a first-come, first-served basis. This policy ensures dot-ca domain names are distributed in a fair, accessible manner to all Canadians. As there may be multiple people sharing the same name, we are unable to make judgments about who has a more legitimate usage of the domain name. In cases where registered trademarks are at issue, CIRA has a policy designed to facilitate resolution of domain name disputes; as edstelmach.ca is a proper name it would not fall under this policy.

In addition, CIRA does not monitor or enforce standards on the content of dot-ca domains. This opens issues of censorship or defining what constitutes acceptable use. There are mechanisms within civil and criminal law -- such as libel, slander, hate, or obscenity laws -- to allow plaintiffs or law enforcement to pursue action against domain holders.

We encourage people who feel their name or identity is of value, such as celebrities and political figures, to be proactive in registering and managing domain names to ensure that they are not registered by someone else.

I find it hilarious that someone who was posting anonymously is lecturing us about personal responsibility.

What we have here is a principle example of a logical fallacy. Simply because Dave was [allegedly] the first to do something, does not mean he should be held responsible for the actions of others, whom he has no control over.

Nonetheless, Ms. Kirby, acting with the poise and dignity of a 7 year old, felt it was necessary to escalate this seemingly trivial issue into a full-blown partisan attack against members of the opposition party who, to this point, had nothing to do with this event.

What is truly asinine, however, about this anonymous "Conservative Crusader", is that he or she had the audacity to accuse Liberals of being bothered by "personal responsibility". Surely, if this individual had enough integrity to post some form of identity, we would find a picture of them located next to both the words 'Irony' and 'Hypocrite' in the english dictionary.

Mr. Stelmach would be wise to denounce this action by one of his party members before taking any further action on this case.

Fran from Medicine Hat commetns: The real story - Hehr and Williams are a threat to the PCs - am sure they tried a few others who, fortunately, had their .ca accts in place.
Just can't wait to see those first public polls on the party standings!
