it's easy to boycott beijing's summer olympics.

If you haven't read it already, make sure to check out Naheed Nenshi's op-ed in yesterday's Calgary Herald in which he articulately explains why he will be joining a growing list of Canadians in deciding to individually boycott the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Nenshi gives a shout out to bloggers who have jumped on the Boycott Beijing 2008 effort (this blog specifically. Thanks, Naheed!), but if you're looking for more information on the Boycott Beijing 2008 movement you can check out my previous post, Laura at We Move to Canada, and Reporters sans frontières.

In more recent news, French President Nicholas Sarkozy has stated that he may boycott the Opening Ceremonies of the Beijing Olympic Games in protest of the recent situation in Tibet.

"Nicolas Sarkozy, the President of France, has led a chorus of European criticism over China's actions in Tibet, refusing to rule out a boycott of the Olympic Games opening ceremony.

The publicity gained by anti-China protesters abroad have generated a fiercer response to China's actions in Tibet

"I don't close the door to any option. I want dialogue to begin and I will graduate my response according to the response given by Chinese authorities," Mr Sarkozy said."

Don't bother. You Tibet Freedom fighters were not invited to come at the first place anyway.

AS U R AGIANST THE TRUE SPIRIT OF OLYMPIC U R NOT WELCOME THERE.
I SUGGEST TO CRACK-DOWN MORE HARDER ON TIBET AS THEY HAVE NO INTENTION TO NEG BUT WANT TO BREAK-UP CHINA.
NO MATTER WHAT CHINA DOES U R AGAINST IT ANYWAY. WHY BRING IN AN INOCENT BYSTANDER--THE OLMPICD & FACE CHINA LIKE A MAN.

AS A CHINESE ALL I SEE IS ANTI-CHINESE,ESP IN THE WEST.
DONT FORGET U R NOT WELCOME HERE--DONT BOTHER TO COME

U r not wecome here anyway.
Why dont u face China like a Man instead of involving an innocent bystander-the Olympic whose true spirit is aport only not political

U r not missed in the game & most un-welcome.
I dont trust the French anyway, esp,Zarkozy. Let him boycott the games & ruin the relatinship with cchina & see who wl sufer the most. Dont u reckon the French wl suffer on behalf of Tibet. If they do we can the call those recent riots as freedom fligthers--this is rubbish & what we call doubbt-standard practise by the west & carried out by people likeu.
If u r anti-chinese why dont u face china like a man instead of bring in an innocent bystander--the olympics. It is a sport not political.

This boycott should have started the second China was given the games.

I understand the sentiment that such a 'boycott' is intended for, but in any place but Beijing it seems the effects would be minimal. For example, I don't watch TV anyway, and I wouldn't buy souvenirs for anything; in that sense, it would be "easy."

A more potent protest of China's many infractions, especially it's decades-old Tibet 'situation', would be to not buy products made in China (and that's not entirely easy). And not just during the Olympics, either.
