Vue Weekly's Bestest of Edmonton 2008 is out and I apparently racked up points in one category...
Bestest Political JokeBlogger Dave Cournoyer linking his appropriated Ed Stelmach website to the wikipedia page for Harry Strom. Zing! DB
Bestest reason to have some hope for electoral democracyIt goes without saying that for people with left of centre (hell, for centre of right) political views, participation in elections at any level of government are typically an exercise in frustration and dismay. So Don Iveson’s Ward 5 victory over incumbent Mike Nickel in the October municipal election brought elation to many who had all but given up the process. A young, articulate guy with smart, forward-thinking ideas, a hard-working election team and the energy to knock on practically every door in the ward beats a conservative incumbent with whackloads of cash who ran an I’m-taking-victory-for-granted campaign? Who would’ve thunk it? SH

Yea - that was a great prediction Dave. Just like Strom.
Unlike Strom, Mr. Stelmach didn't face a prospective "Peter Lougheed" in any of the other provincial party leaders this past election.
But, should one manage to come to be and rise above the current crop, Stelmach will no doubt face a tougher challenge.
That is, if said party leader has resources (money) at his disposal to get the message out and get 'face time' with Albertans.
... oh, and if Albertans actually are inspired enough to show up to the polls. Lougheed was elected, after all, with over 70% turnout....
Lots of ifs, there... :(
Yeah, that so called joke really turned out to be a joke on you huh?
Yeah, that so called joke really turned out to be a joke on you huh?
How's that?
I loved the punchline of the Stelmach "missappropriation of personality" joke... Liberal seat count cut in half!
Seriously, you should take some pride that because you held onto your "joke" for far too long and poorly played the role of the extreme-partisan-in-innocent-schoolboy-garb, you did nothing in the end but help Stelmach.
As a PC, I thank you.
Thanks, Anonymous! I'll put my invoice in the mail today!
I think the point (that everyone here is also pointing out) was that Stelmach turned out to be the exact opposite of Strom... elected to many seats in a crushing majority! That little stunt likely gave it enough media to put it into peoples minds to get out and vote for their premier - so you helped Mr. Stelmach's campaign along a wee bit... hence, the real joke is on you.
Oh, that and it makes you look petty for having done it.
Yes, I'm sure that after 37 years of electing majorities, the history books will document how the author of the great blog known as daveberta.ca preserved the Tory dynasty for another 37 years.
Go Dave! Go Don!
