pope: dear gays, you are just as much a threat as climate change.

ZENIT.ORG: “The Pope warned against the manipulation that takes place in national and international forums when the term “gender” is altered. “The rain forests certainly deserve our protection, but man as creature indeed deserves no less,” he added.”

Now we know what is causing global warming: raining men.

It's raining men, halleluja!"

Oh fer fuck’s sake. Sure, why not add the total destruction of the entire planet to the list of things I can be blamed for. That a-hole of a pope actually uses his brand of faith as a reason to promote bigotry, he is a charlatan.

Ooh, now I’m in a snit.

I have ZERO respect for an organization that has expended so much time and effort protecting child molesters, helping them to avoid detection by moving them around to victimize more kids, while at the same time doing everything in its power to ensure that gay people in loving adult relationships get as little protection and fair treatment as possible. The Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Church's political arm, just spent $1.5 million in California to ensure gays would be stripped of the right to marry. The pope (along with the U.S.) refused to sign the UN agreement against laws banning homosexuality. Apparently raping children is not only okay but actually worth protecting and defending, while consensual loving adult relationships are not.

I'm all in favour of what the Pope is saying. Destroying hetero-normativity will come at a price. Especially in Canada, where we cannot sustain our population, we need a healthy rate of reproduction, and good models for fathering.

Studies have proven for the past 50 years that the best environment for children is being raised by their biological parents in a stable marriage.

This floating gender thing is deviant.

Good for Benedict for not being afraid of being unpopular and calling it as it is.

Usual stupidity and hatred, what a shame...studies show that many rainforest tribes are gay friendly unlike the Catholic Church they have an excellent record of protecting the environment.

The pope ought to do something about systematic child abuse in his catholic church.

my thoughts on all this http://another-green-world.blogspot.com/2008/12/fk-pope.html

What a humbug.

It just wouldn't be Christmas without some humanist slagging the Pope.

He speaks what he thinks... isn't that what people say they wish their leaders would do?

The only thing he is guilty of is writing in such long-winded style as to be easily summarized in a hack piece.

Merry Christ-mass.

What Benedict actually said:

Since faith in the Creator is an essential part of the Christian Creed, the Church cannot and should not limit itself to transmitting to its faithful only the message of salvation. She has a responsibility for Creation, and it should validate this responsibility in public.

In so doing, it should defend not just the earth, water and air as gifts of Creation that belong to everyone. She should also protect man from destroying himself.

It is necessary to have something like an ecology of man, understood in the right sense. It is not outdated metaphysics when the Church speaks of the nature of the human being as man and woman, and asks that this natural order be respected.

This has to do with faith in the Creator and listening to the language of creation, which, if disregarded, would be man's self-destruction and therefore a destruction of God's work itself.

That which has come to be expressed and understood with the term 'gender' effectively results in man's self-emancipation from Creation (nature) and from the Creator. Man wants to do everything by himself and to decide always and exclusively about anything that concerns him personally. But this is to live against truth, to live against the Spirit Creator.

The tropical rain forests deserve our protection, yes, but man does not deserve it less as a Creature of the Spirit himself, in whom is inscribed a message that does not mean a contradiction of human freedom but its condition.

The great theologians of Scholasticism described matrimony - which is the lifelong bond between a man and a woman - as a sacrament of Creation, that the Creator himself instituted, and that Christ, without changing the message of Creation, welcomed in the story of his alliance with men.

Part of the announcement that the Church should bring to men is a testimonial for the Spirit Creator present in all of nature, but specially in the nature of man, who was created in the image of God.

One must reread the encyclical Humanae vitae with this perspective: the intention of Pope Paul VI was to defend love against consumer sex, the future against the exclusive claim of the moment, and human nature against manipulation.

It brings me great delight to be described in Ratties words as being self-emancipated, although obviously intended as a pejorative, and setting aside the nature/nurture debate, I cannot think of anything more complimentary and liberating than self determination of sexuality along with every other facet of life.

It is time that people twigged that theism has always preached hate and subordination. I'm delighted to be free to choose reason and freedom over theism and hate.

I can only hope that the church clings to its messages of hate and drives people to concern themselves more with the problems of humanity than self indulgent escapism from the realities of mortality.

The churches have always fought tooth and nail against human rights, equality for women, reproductive freedoms, and GLBT freedoms.

With all it's power and money one would think that the church would concern itself more with the death of millions in third world countries and the aids epidemic, disasters magnified by their anti-contraception and anti-abortion message, yet again the catholic church participates in genocide, happy to ensure unsustainable selfish population growth without any conscience of the poverty, hardship, war and famine it's reproductive selfishness causes.

As for being responsible for climate change; with unsustainable population growth encouraged in no small way by many religions, the church is itself IS responsible for climate change.

I'd like to nominate Ratty for the most evil, hypocritical man in the world, no one is causing more suffering in the world today and storing problems for tomorrow.

Jennifer, you might be interested to know that the Catholic Church cares for 27% of AIDs victims worldwide, and that it is the biggest charitable organization in the world.

However you seem to be caught up in the Margaret Sanger-Malthusian paradygm, otherwise known as the Culture of Death, where the first world, though its greed, feels free to suppress the population of poorer nations in order to grab more of the world's resources for itself. Thank goodness the Church is there, with the Dalit in India, and with all the other poor, saying "you are a child of God."

The Holy See recently made this statement at the United Nations regarding the Declaration of Human Rights: "Human rights are at risk if not rooted on the ethical foundation of our common humanity as created by God who has given everyone the gifts of intelligence and freedom."

"A healthy realism, therefore, is the foundation of human rights, that is, the acknowledgement of what is real and inscribed in the human person and in creation.

"When a breach is caused between what is claimed and what is real through the search of so-called new human rights, a risk emerges to reinterpret the accepted human rights vocabulary to promote mere desires and measures that, in turn, become a source of discrimination and injustice and the fruit of self-serving ideologies.

"By speaking of the right to life, of respect for the family, of marriage as the union between a man and a woman, of freedom of religion and conscience, of the limits of the authority of the state before fundamental values and rights, nothing new or revolutionary is said and both the letter and the spirit of the declaration are upheld, and coherence with the nature of things and the common good of society is preserved."

You may be ideologically against the biology you were born with, but that doesn't make you right.
