ted morton's bill 208 - pwned!

The Alberta Liberal and NDP caucus' were sucessful in filibustering Ted Morton's Bill 208 yesterday afternoon in the Alberta Legislature.

In response to the still-death of his bill, Dr. Morton had these words to offer:

"The Liberals not only were irresponsible in blocking debate today, they were stupid, too."
Liberal House Leader Laurie Blakeman responded with:
"I'm not going to accept arguments from Dr. Morton that he deserves special treatment to get his bill up and I'm frankly not going to accept that from the Speaker either."
ADDENUM - I would just like to send a shout out to all those folks who felt inclined to send me emails filled with lots of nasty names and accusations. Glad to know that you're reading my blog!

This is "wonderful" news.

Let me guess where your nasty emails, etc. came from - "neo-cons" right?

It was definitely more fun than I've ever had at the Alberta legislature before. Did you catch the whole challenge of the Calgary Liberal MLA's "straight, not narrow" t-shirt, and Laurie Blakeman's and then the Speaker's response? If not, you should go read it in Hansard. It's comedy gold.

I have a question.

What is the Alberta legislature doing back in session before Labor Day, and did anyone tell Premier Klein about it?

Premier Klein asked for it! You see he has this fishing trip next week, and the dates for that really weren't flexible... you know how it is when your fishing buddies are CEO's of multinational oil firms. It's just much easier to reschedule the governing wing of our province than it is to move a few CEOs' appointments around.

Thanks for posting on Bill 208 before, during and after Dave. Remember that those of us that agree with you were less inclined to e-mail you than the haters. We were all busy e-mailing MLAs our objections!

Cheers,

Anon

Thx for pushing the point in the blogosphere. Glad to see it was not passed. It would have been wrong.

It wasn't just the Liberals or the NDP. But OK.

" It wasn't just the Liberals or the NDP. But OK."

Okay. Well, how many Tory MLA's showed up to be counted as opposed to Bill 208? How many Tory MLA's spoke out against Bill 208? Why are they so afraid of Ted Morton to even speak up?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think the Monday afternoon session was set aside for Bill 208. Rather, I thought that Morton was attempting to have his bill sent to the top of the Private Members Bill list, again. Regardless, it was far more important to have had the Legislature have emergency debates on Housing and Wood Buffalo municipal infrastructure.
