blair wilson.

On the eve of a federal election call, Canada has found itself with its first Green Party MP: Blair Wilson.

Her argument that now that they have a seat in Parliament because they have an MP is flawed if she means to argue that that was the criteria used to award spots in the debate to the Reform and Bloc in 1993. The Reform and Bloc had won by-elections prior to the 1993 election, whereas the Greens still have not elected an MP, they just had someone switch parties.
Not that I'm saying the Greens shouldn't have a place in the debate, I just find the argument flawed.

I think you're right. Although it's at the provincial and not federal level, the most recent comparative example I can think of - of a seat-less, fledgling party gaining a floor-crosser as its first representative - was the Alberta Alliance picking up Gary Masyk in 2004.

In that case, having a sitting member didn't help then-Alliance leader Randy Thorsteinson get into the televised debates in that same year's general election, either.

I don't think there's a precedent for May's participation, here.
